William James (1842 - 1910), famous American psycho logist and philosopher, was one of the strongest pro po nents of the school of Functionalism in psychology, and Pragmatism in philosophy. William studied medicine, physiology and biology before recieving a professional medical degree from Harvard university, where he spent his entire academic career. With his monumental Prin ciples of Psychology (1890) James gained widespread recognition.
